Public Art “Growing Home” Unveiled at Park 12 – The Collection’s Plaza in San Diego’s East Village
Twenty-Two Foot Iconic “Shell” Sculpture Tells the History of San Diego in Narrative Form
SAN DIEGO (March 1, 2019) –– a Greystar luxury apartment and retail community in San Diego’s East Village – has unveiled “Growing Home,” an iconic sculpture and centerpiece for the community’s expansive semicircular public plaza at 10th and Park, which will also be home to a variety of dining, retail and services.
Inspired by a turret shell found on a local beach by Jerry Brand, senior managing director of west coast development for Greystar, and designed by Joe O’Connell of Creative Machines, the 22-foot sculpture tells the history of significant San Diego events and milestones in narrative form, laser cut into the stainless-steel piece. The text is arranged in bands that begin with the oldest prehistory at the top, progressing to the most recent history at the bottom opening of the shell.“The sculpture pays homage to San Diego’s history by mirroring the mollusk’s growth cycle, where successive bands of shell are added to its opening as it grows, carrying the shell’s history with it – much like San Diego has grown since its inception, building on past events with each new year,” said O’Connell.
Lit from within, the shell has a place for visitors to sit inside it, and large pebbles surrounding it, acting as additional seats. At night, the light projects words onto the plaza and the people who walk through, drawing them to the sculpture to learn more. Marrying the design, the decorative plaza concrete is seeded with a pearlescent crushed oyster shells that reflect sunlight and captures light from the sculpture.
“Adding to San Diego’s budding public art scene, ‘Growing Home’ will provide a place for Park 12 – The Collection’s residents and visitors alike to learn about San Diego’s history, admire the intricacies of the piece and gather with friends and family for discussion and photo opps,” said Brand.
